Simone and Califiore are Killing It
9:03 AM
Gail Simone and J. Califiore (Luvisi included for cover-treatment) as a creative team are creating fanboy crotch rockets (and the female equivalent) nationwide with their monthly celebration of comics in Secret Six. Much love to Nicola Scott- who I will be stalking wherever her art graces (this month's Wonderwoman), but Califiore has a thing for really delivering the mood that is set in SS's grim-high octane action and dark humor.
Secret Six #21 continues the path of vengeance being taken by Catman with the fractured effects on the team, some looking to help him--Toyman, Black Alice, Savage and Deadshot-- leaving Bane & Banshee having to bring on some replacement killers.
Similar to the cult following Bendis & Deodato commanded on Dark Avengers- Simone & Califiore do much of the same, but Secret Six draws the readers in more to care or connect with this rag-tag group of anti-heroes. Simone's infectious sly, comic-relief has a lot to do with it. Even more so is the success she has in focusing on every individual just enough while weaving everyone back in to make the most of the fab ensemble.
The sequence below brings you in and out of Catman's haunting past to his present hunt and nearly made me jerk from one of the more unpleasant ways of exiting a vehicle.
Best team book I have touched since Whedon & Cassaday's astonishing run on X-Men. The secret is out.
