Mixed Plate Comics- Week of 2.23.11
1:36 PM
A sad week to be a nerd. With that said tons of great books, films and stuff to get us out of that funk. Bummers to not have a new episode of Young Justice and who else was not feeling that Smallville rip of Hangover?? Only cool spot was hawtie Cassidy Freeman rocking the mic and that bit of Chloe telling Clark that she has recruited Batman and Wonder-Woman into their league. Ahh and here are the panels, pages and word bubbles that kept me flipping all week: Gotham City Sirens #20 / Fantastic Four #588 / Iron Man 2.0 #1 / New York Five #2 / Power Girl #21 / Secret Avengers #10 / Justice League: Generation Lost #20 / Action Comics #898 / Teen Titans #92 / Avengers #10
5 Fantastic Four #588 Jonathan Hickman & Nick Dragotta/Mark Brooks
An impressive homage to the always classic art stylee of FF co-creator and legend Jack Kirby. Didn't know much about artist Nick Dragotta but I sure do now! Despite the throwback illustrations, Hickman's contemporary and exceptional storytelling allowed for a gripping, emotional, hold your breath kinda page turner with so much too see in the pictures that dialogue was non-existent until the very end.
The book covered a month of mourning for the recently departed Johnny Storm-- how it has impacted each of the family members-- and leaves some breadcrumbs on what we can expect in the coming issues of the re-tooled Future Foundation story threads.
Equally as engaging is the second part of the final Fantastic Four ish that takes us into an intimate conversation between Spidey and Franklin, who both share the loss of a close best friend / Uncle. Creates a real natural bridge to Spidey's inclusion to the band of scientists, filling the space of his buddy and acting as a mentor for his #1 fanboy (all-powerful) Franklin Richards.
4 Power Girl #21 Judd Winick & Sami Basri
The tie-in arc with the JLI book (Generation Lost) looks to get even better with Karen getting the cold shoulder from Booster, Ice and the rest of her friends as they deal with the death of Blue Beetle and what's up with Winick and his hate for the Beetles? Yes, if you recall it was him and Geoff Johns that killed off Ted Kord (Jaime Reyes' predecessor) to kick-off Infinite Crisis. Again, hoping this is a way for them to bring

Kord back somehow... PG then leans on Batman (Dick Grayson) for help by forcing him into remembering that Max Lord is in fact a real person and responsible for a number of orchestrated attacks against the hero community (murdered Magog- though blamed on Captain Atom).
Dick is eventually coerced into working his detective mojo on the corpse of Kord with the O.G. Dark Knight and Bruce uses his knack for logic to convince him that Ted Kord did not take his own life. Being that Bruce Wayne was not around this timeline during Lord's global-mindf*ck of Earth's population...he wasn't affected and knows just how dangerous of a player he is. So that puts the JLI, Power Girl and the Batmen on the opposition of the devious head of Checkmate.
Really curious how this will play out into the eventual Flashpoint books being that Batman is know somewhat of a time-jumper
3 Secret Avengers #10 Ed Brubaker & Mike Deodato
Commander Rogers and the rest of his black ops crew get their much needed revenge on the agents of the Shadow Council- Fury and Steele, that to this point have had their way with the Avengers.
Moon Knight gets into some of his own comedy hi-jinks (usually savored by Ant-Man) when he is discovered behind enemy lines. Good to see Valkyrie & Widow make a rare appearance in their attack that is highlighted by War Machine and Rogers busting an ill take on the fast-ball special which leaves, Steele a bit incapacitated.
Wannabe Fury gets his ass easily handed to him too, which was a bit deflating since he has pretty much been the elusive, major badass in the last issues. Oh wells, all things come to an end! Shang-Chi is eventually saved from nearly being sacrificed to some demons by his insane, evil zombified pops. Next chapter will go WWII flashbacks into the super-soldier antics of John Steele and Steve Rogers.
Brubaker and Deodato deliver on the goods that IMO is the tops Avengers book out there (yeah, there is like ten of em or something).
2 Justice League: Generation Lost #20 Judd Winick & Joe Bennett
Winick humanizes Max Lord as less the evil, big-boss man by telling his origin story on how his family were victims to powerful, big-bad Corporations. Due to his father's supposed murder and mother influencing Max to go down the darkside-- to be less of a philanthropist and more in line with the likes of Lex Luthor. Re-living his transformation with the retcon of his mommy-dearest, made me think of how Lord was written by Giffen and DeMatteis prior to his infection and though he was written as an corporate- opportunist-- Lord
was definitely a force for good.
As for him now being more the maniacal, global politician with a world-view of how he can make the world better for the many-- despite the suffering of the few-- it's right in line with why I was such a fan of the Checkmate book when it was headed up by the man, Greg Rucka.
I still for some reason doubt that Jaime Reyes is dead though. It's hard to swallow down that a young, relatable, Latino-hero will be axed-- especially with his supposed live-action TV show that DC is trying to get picked up in the future. Whoa, now that was a bit of an tangent...My bad! As you can guess, the final standoff of Lord and his OMACS (so pumped to see them back!!) and the JLI is right around the corner and expect some major fireworks between the old buds Booster and Lord.
My fave non- Batman or GL book out there. Props to Winick for his impressive salvo of left (JL: Generation Lost) and right (Power Girl) handed jabs for the knockout of this weeks top-list...well almost if it wasn't for..
1 Action Comics #898 Paul Cornell & Pete Woods
How can you not be hooked with the rematch between Lex and Larfleeze (with some help from Glomulus)?! This comedy-infused action genre has been missed since Blackest Night, where Larfleeze stole the show from Hal, but lucky us that we have the rest of DCU creative like Cornell and Woods rocking their Orange Lantern stories!
Funniest shit in sometime with Larfleeze calling one of Luthor's croonies a "construct"!!!! Oh man, nothing more to say on this ish as you really need to read it yourself.

Life Imitates Art- All-Star Superman
9:30 AM
Enjoyed the bittersweet release of All-Star Superman yesterday along with all the wonderful goodies that were packaged in the two-disc edition (yep, I am one of those non-Bluray guys). But as I usually do with these uber-cool DC Animated films-- cannon-balled right into the featurette to celebrate Dwayne McDuffie's final hurrah to us lovers of comics/animation. Like the comicbook it was adapted from, All-Star Superman is the quintessential film on Clark Kent/Kal-El and his amazing life.
As promised by the creative team at WB/DC Animation-- this flick is just as emotional, action-packed and faithful to Morrison & Quitely's 12 issue maxi-series, which I truly believed was an impossible feat. For anytime you experience a book first, especially difficult with the rich visuals of Frank Quitely and layered concepts of Grant Morrison-- its harsh to think the film can be as rewarding, but Dwayne McDuffie brilliantly captures a script that allows us to go through similar emotions and ideas as a viewer.
Sure, there are some components to the book that did not make it's way in the film like the story threads focused on Jimmy Olsen, Supermen of the Future, Bizzaro and Mon-El but the essential relationships between Superman, Lex Luthor & Lois Lane are all in there.
The simple concept of Superman living out his last hopes and wishes before falling to cancer (radiation poisoning from the Sun via Luthor) is a touching, reflective and very humanizing method for us to feel a sense of deep connection to the man of steel.
Top moments of All-Star Superman were quite similar to the book with the jail-scene adventure where Lex is being interviewed by Clark and a little problem like Parasite heightens things. Of course Lois' birthday where Kal-El shares a day in his life via a 24-hr super-serum making her Superwoman. It's really not just about the highs and lows of the story that makes the film feel so authentic to the book-- but every nuance and detail in capturing the look and feel of the characters-- such as Clark's clumsy entrance where he is about to be canned and Lex's scene where he is about to lose his powers and realizes how wrong he has been about Superman on just about every damn thing.
The inclusion of "Superman Now," a discussion with Grant Morrison and Dan Didio on the inner-workings, ideals and everything else behind the scenes on the book is just mesmerizing.
I am always at a loss for words on how deep Morrison can go to reach into our inner-psyche and yet re-create our own mundane, day to day in his stories as the thing to celebrate. He is the man.
And finally, we get a peak behind this Summer's next DC Animated flick with First Look at Green Lantern: Emerald Knights!!!
Really geeking out over how well of a job DCE has coordinated efforts to make the most of this coming Green-Summer that has books, movies, animation (this one and the ongoing on Cartoon Network), videogames and of course the toys speaking to us in the same language! No more who the hell is Krona?!
Oh and Laira is being voice-acted by Kelly Hu??! Hawtness!

RIP Dwayne McDuffie (1962-2011)
3:04 PM
Just got back from a long lunch meeting to hear some very shocking and unsettling news about the far too early passing of acclaimed storyteller Dwayne McDuffie.
The famed renaissance man of comics and animation has been entertaining us and challenging the standards of racial equality through all mediums he touches for over the past two decades.
Most known by readers for his pioneering of Milestone Comics creations in the 90's-- symbolized by authentic, uplifting and ambitious characterizations of colored/ethnic heroes that were pushed forward to the front & center of stories versus the long-held use of people of color only in ancillary/sidekick roles-- more so than not were highly stereotyped archetypes.
We have come so far since then in the world of comics-- even having some of McDuffie's most popular Milestone creations eventually brought into the DC Universe continuity and stand toe-to toe in panel-time, dialogue and significance with Superman, Batman and Wonder-Woman-- in one of the more purposeful, creative Justice League of America arcs released in the last 3 years, titled JLA: When World's Collide.
More recently, McDuffie has taken on major screenwriting duties for two of Grant Morrison's books that were translated to animated flicks: Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths- easily one of my favorite adaptations to date and the much hyped release today of All-Star Superman. Here is some footage of Dwayne in a Q&A session at the LA premiere taken just last week.
On a final note, if there was no Hardware-- I probably wouldn't be loving the modernized version of Mr. Terrific so much despite him pretty much being the same damn character...just saying. And why can't anyone besides McDuffie or Tony Bedard breakdown some ill scribework on GL John Stewart?

Remender is Killing It
11:10 AM
Rick Remender was a name that popped up around 2008 to me from my homies/comic-pimps James (Isotope Lounge) and Ryan (Comic Conspiracy) as I always ask these cats who I need to watch out for as the next BFD. I was impressed with his 2 ish Starro story in Booster Gold 13 and 14 which had big shoes to fill following up the incomparable Geoff Johns.
Remender's style was crafty, inventive and full of laughs as it should be with Booster. So now we are in 2011 and I have been reading books that don't bare an X for the last few years-- well until now. In Uncanny X-Force, Remender pushes his pen to a whole different rhythm with darker strokes (not unlike his work in Punisher I hear) on the mutant wetworks splinter-cell. In a mere 5 issues, we are seeing the fleshing out of a real intriguing character in Fantomex, the rare humanity and serious-side in Deadpool (after Apocalypse was murdered) and a collection of uh-not-ah takes with use of obscure characters like The Fourhorseman and Deathlok.
With most incredible writers you can bet equally talented artists are on board to elevate the visuals and story-- and we have been treated to such so far-- with Jerome Opena and Esad Ribic. And just peep that upcoming cover by Simone Bianchi! *drool*
In Uncanny X-Force 5.1 (yeah I still don't get it, though it signals a jumping on kinda book, right?) Remender is teamed with artist Rafael Albuquerque to bring Psylocke and the rest of the hitsquad headup with Lady Deathstrike and the Marauders. And if you haven't heard, Remender is busting some new shit on Venom in Amazing Spider-man. Pick it up, pick it up!

toy collectwhore: Orange Lantern Lex Luthor
11:49 PM
Had good fun breaking down some quality articulated art of the past few years but with all the dope pieces that have come out recently--emphasis on DC Direct's Blackest Night wave 8-- here we are back to 2011.
Orange Lantern Lex Luthor

Fun Factor: Immediately, I noticed something that is one of the only knocks I usually call DC Direct on-- and that is in the realms of higher points of articulation.
Of Blackest Night wave 8, Black Lantern Flash and Lex are the first casts that go beyond their standard 12 movable joints to 16 in the biceps and ankles. Sure it's not in the Mattel/Hasbro world of movement with 20+ points, but surely in the right direction.
And how can we not recreate the battle over who wants everything more between the DCU's grinch Larfleeze (with the assist from Glomulus) and the insatiable power-monger, Lex Luthor.
Artistic Integrity: So many concepts from Blackest Night that was utter genius. Near the top-- was the use of deputy Lanterns to help with the slaughter of the DCU at the hands of the Black Lanterns. And now we got Orange Lantern Lex, as Agent Orange 2.0 in one of the most impressive figs of the past 8 lines.
Really dig how they went with the look of the costume in it's transparent plastic form to resemble how Lex's Avarice-flipped power suit is a construct projection.
Aesthetics of the toy is closer in look to one of Doug Mahnke's dark drawings with his menacing, crazed gaze. Only hit on this is that the neck armor is nothing like any of the Blackest Night art we have seen but more of a stylistic shout to the old Super Powers line.

Fo-reals brah:
The look and feel of this fab fig is dope indeed and though I am not often one to get duplicates between the same pieces made by both DC Direct and Mattel-- will have to break that norm as the Four Horseman rock an ill version of their own. Feb 17, 2011
RAP POWER RANKINGS 02.17.11
11:27 AM
The definitive word on the movers and shakers in the wide world of rap.
1. Killer Mike "Burn" - Killer Mike is Amerikkka's Most Wanted reincarnated. And you can add "Burn" right to the top of his resume. If you're the praying type, you should add a remix with Boots from the Coup to the top of your list of requests.
2. Saigon The Greatest Story Never Told - Do rap albums age like fine wine when they sit around for years before being released? The prosecution directs your attention to Exhibit A, Big Boi's Sir Lucious Left Foot, and Exhibit B, Saigon's The Greatest Story Never Told. Will Detox be Exhibit C?
3. Nation of Thizzlam Presents The 50 Greatest Bay Area Rap Songs - This is rap. This is rap on drugs. Any questions?
4. Dubstep - Remember the scene in Children of Men when Michael Caine plays that purposefully obnoxious music because Clive Owen has a headache? Wasn't that dubstep? Can't we wait for 2027 before it gets popular?
5. Pusha-T "My God" - Rapping about the nuances of cocaine sales should be boring by now. But Measuring Cup P manages to keep it fresh.
6. @GhostfaceKillah - Starks handed out jewels of Valentine's Day advice 140 characters at a time on Monday. Choosing one best example is impossible, but here's our best attempt.

7. 89 Skratch Gangstaz Gangstaz Need Love, Too - Speaking of romance, there really is no better way to get your girl in the mood than this 32-track mix of love songs from your favorite rap tough guys, including rare cuts from E-40, Dr. Dre and the kings of baby-making music, South Central Cartel.
8. "The Bold & the Beautiful" - Amber and her mom pulled off the rigged paternity test, but can she keep her secret long enough to land a payday from Liam and his dad, Bill Spencer?
9. Tyler the Creator "Yonkers" - This video sparked some hilarious rap blogger beef on Twitter and features bug eating, barfing and the black eyeball effect "True Blood" used during season 2.
10. CunninLynguists "Stars Shine Brightest" - The instrumental sounds like a rap version of the quiet storm. Normally that wouldn't be a compliment, but it works here.

Mixed Plate Comics- Week of 2.09.10
12:12 PM
Continually hearing about more Fear Itself teasers-- which will be a big PASS for me, bummed to hear that Bedard & St. Aubin's REBELS tile will be ending with the start of Flashpoint, along with Outsiders and some random Batman titles (that few peeps read anyways.) With Jaime Reyes now out thx to Lord, will that mean the return of Ted Kord in someway?! Hope so! And pretty cool reveal on Hot Pursuit of Flashpoint actually being Barry Allen. Here are the panels, pages and word bubbles that kept me flipping all week: Red Robin #20 / Titans #32 / Secret Warriors #24 / R.E.B.E.L.S. #25 / Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #7 / Casanova: Gula II / Batgirl #18 / Incognito: Bad Influences #3 / Batman and Robin #20 / Widowmaker #4 / Birds of Prey #9 / Justice League: Generation Lost #19 / The Flash #9
5 Incognito: Bad Influences #3 Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips
Yes! The wait was definitely not quite as long it took for #2 to hit the shelves but I still had to bruise through the last two issues to play catch up on what Zack's motives were really all about. Are his ties to SOS real or is it just his infatuation with his boss/lover Zoe?
Overkill dives into his past with help from his old bud King Midas as they attempt to infiltrate the old stomping grounds of the criminal underworld. Everyone believes Zack is just a mole and he forgets how things work on the other side, as King gets capped and his ass looks to be next on the block.
The further he goes into his old ways, a deeper consciousness comes forward as he starts to think he can be redeemed to work for the other side of the law. Slaughter of L9 continues to get updated on Zack's collateral damage he is causing on this biz-- while the mysteriously hooded Lazarus wannabe is hot on the trail. The secret...is pulp!
4 Batman and Robin #20 Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason
Love Paul Cornell's writing but wasn't jumping for joy with his fill-in work after Morrison but yeah, we got Tomasi and Gleason on deck now girls and boys! It's really a treat to see how well Gleason works the dark skyline of Gotham and though very much in his own style-- gives ode to Quitely's stylings of Batman & Robin in their build and movements. Awesome!
Tomasi who is again my top 1B writer (1A would be Morrison and Johns in easy 2) takes us back into the detective, casework type of feel that I have missed in this book. Why look folks-- it's a Commissioner Gordon appearance!! Well, how about that. He gives Damian a good scolding for not being more respectful of the departed and Robin shows he has the deductive chops like his father in noticing some details of the supposed suicide victim.
As Dick and Damian return to the point of the jump-- they find some more clues and out of nowhere a deranged Man-Bat gets the drop on Batman. Though it is often used, I like seeing Robin be the one to save Batman as it is surely a refreshing take on the dynamic duo. And what is up with all these white bats?! Is Deadman around?? Probably not, but we will find out next month.
3 Casanova: Gula #2 Matt Fraction & Fabio Moon
Now that I have read through the Luxuria arc I have a better sense of the unique storytelling in this trippy, doubleagent, mindtrick of a book. Am I still a bit confused, yes. When is Casanova Quinn? How the hell should I know? What I am happy about though is how we are now following more of the adventures of Cas' slutty sister-- Zeph.
I don't think I have ever seen more "action" one person could get in panels-- made me think, huh I suppose it's true about that saying of adding 20 whenever a woman tells you her sex scorecard. Hmm... I love how they include a recipe for one of theseoddball, crazy killers that Zeph is currently aligned to, well more so to his son.
One of the greatest opening sequences in comics evar where the boss of a swinger club/mafia tells one of his stars/pawns on how she has created cinemated masterpieces thanks to all her hard "work." Fraction's dialogue is the shit and as always Moon kills the pages and brings Brazilian artists to even more fame in the world of sequential art.
2 Batgirl #18 Bryan Q. Miller & Dustin Nguyen
I missed Morrison's mini on Klarion back in his Seven Soldiers story so had no background on this character prior to this read. Klarion, who is a emo lil' Witch-boy comes across Steph and she ends agrees to help find a mate for his pet kitty. Every witch has a cat right? Okay, so they go into some limbo world where every one dresses Amish or like a Pilgrim and are, yes witches! Fun, right?
Especially when our hero is called out for a magic-duel and Steph gets physical on the unsuspecting witch-girl. A hilarious scene that is wonderfully written in old english or whatevs language pilgrims use. As Batgirl is the ousted in Klarion's world, the same kinda outcast banter is directed towards him by some of Steph's classmate at a fair.
To save the poor girls from getting transformed into a toad or something along that line-- Steph grabs Klarion and plants a big wet one on him. As the college kids all scream out geek-love!! I think to myself how incredible of a book Mr. Miller has created in this fave Bat-book of mine. Seriously you gotta check what an amazing read they all got brewing here. Oh and I am convinced at how badass Dustin Nguyen is at not only super-fly at covers-- you gotta see the JLI ish out now-- but as a prominent interiors guy.
1 Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #7 Peter J. Tomasi & Fernando Pasarin
Zardor nearly adds Guy and Bleeze to his collection of depowered, mindless Lanterns but with help from Kilowog and Arisia-- they breakout from his nasty-yellow, psychic cess-pool for the big standoff. It's revealed that Krona was actually to blame for making Sodam/Ion go AWOL from the GLC and Zardor takes full advantage by making him his new pawn.
Guy just about pulls the kill-shot on Ion, when Arisia makes him miss and in the end-- the three Emerald Warriors are all pals again. Stage set for Green Lantern War to hit the rest of the GL books, next! Oh did you notice how Tomasi came up twice in our top list?! Yes, though Johns is working his mojo all over the DCE mediums-- thankfully we got good ole Pete keeping the GL world og comics fresh.

Dark Knight Rises the Sexiness - Enter Talia Al Ghul and Black Mask
10:51 AM
Warner Bros. Entertainment has announced this morning the addition of more Inception alumni to Dark Knight Rises with Marion Cotillard to play the heiress, seductress of Talia Al Ghul and Joseph Gordon Levitt to take on the role of demented, mob boss Black Mask.
At first this press release was debunked as a fake but WBE has confirmed shortly after that the sexy casting add-ons are the genuine article. These additions add so many more angles that can be played out in Nolan's final arc with the Al Ghul clan coming back to haunt Bruce Wayne from the first flick and of course, the Black Mask filling the power vacuum left behind by the Joker-- just like in the books! Right, right!!
Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have been cast in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises and will join an ensemble cast alongside Christian Bale who returns in the title role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. They will play Talia al Ghul and Roman Sionis respectively. For those not familiar with the lore of Talia Al Ghul-- she represents the closest thing to a significant other to Bats-- besides well Selina Kyle/Catwoman, but what Talia and Bruce share is a son (biological, unlike Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Tim Drake) in Damian Wayne(played out in Grant Morrison's Batman and Son arc).
On casting Cotillard, Director Christopher Nolan stated, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with Marion again and have no doubt she will be a great addition to our ensemble cast and bring to life a key part of the universe we have created as we finish our story.”
On the addition of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Nolan said, “I am thrilled to be working with Joseph again after a delightful experience working with him on Inception and am certain he will deliver another thrilling performance as one of Batman’s most popular villains.”
Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
The Dark Knight Rises is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
In recent comics continuity, Talia has attempted to erase all of Catwoman's memories shared with Batman to further break Bruce Wayne's connections to other women in his life. Love triangles are just the best, yeah!

New Trailer! Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters
12:23 PM
So we have seen how Green Lantern will be stealing peg/shelf space from shops this Spring, hitting us with an original animation(Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) a week prior to the film-- now how about the GL brand cutting into some of your valuable gametime?!
Gametrailers just threw up this decent cinematic teaser and with it we get to see Sinestro, Kilowog and GL newb Hal Jordan ring-sling to protect OA from an invasion of the crazy-robot Manhunters.

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is inspired by the feature film, which brings the enduringly popular DC COMICS SUPER HERO to the big screen for the first time and which stars Ryan Reynolds in the title role as HAL JORDAN, the newest member of the GREEN LANTERN CORPS. In the videogame players will utilize over a dozen constructs and take flight across the deepest parts of the Universe to restore intergalactic order by wielding the ultimate weapon: the Green Lantern power ring.Like most videogames released with films, the character designs are pretty damn close to what we will see on the big screen-- and if the Manhunters are in fact that weaksauce in the movie--well, that would just bite! Sure a quick clip, but more footage showing Kilowog and Sinestro and how close they capture their comicbook likeness is fabadouchess!

WTF moment of the week- Toy Fair 2011
3:46 PM
This installment of Whoa That's Fresh takes on a cruise of what got us feasting for those art sculpts in 2011-- through day one of Toy Fair, via forums and pics from our fave toy pirate sites at the show-- The Fwoosh, AFI, Action Figure Times, Toyarc and TNI.
Mattel throws out a major stunner by bringing a mix of old & new school versions of The Crime Syndicate of Amerika. While Ultraman, Power-Ring and Johnny Quick remain retro, Owl-Man and Superwoman are contemporary res that look more in line with Morrison/Quitely's JLA Earth 2 book and the recent DCU Animation- Crisis of Two Earths.
These DCU badboys will be available as an exclusive Walmart 5 pk in Fall 2011. Just lovin the detail and efforts they put into the twisted suped up Lois Lane and evil Batman doppelganger of the CSA.
Other visual offerings on display from the Four Horseman of Mattel were the highly anticipated, crazy-massive 12-pk of the Legion of Superheroes that I just don't have any shelf space for (how in the hell did they not include Triplicate Girl or Dawnstar? ugh), but DCUC Wave 18 is ill! For those 80's nostalgia-heads you got part Super Friends with the inclusion of those ethnic-add ins Samurai, El Dorado, Black Vulcan and a C&C Apache (where the hell is Rima the Jungle-Girl?!) on top of some dope O.G. Suicide Squad figs- Bronze Tiger, Captain Boomerang and classic Toyman.
Four Horseman really up the ante on how much detail they put into the face and other aspects-- look at the difference in paint used from flat to shiny on Digger's jacket to his gauntlets and check out da boomerangs across his chest- sick yo!
Young Justice lines in both 3 3/4" and 6 " were also on display from Mattel though the promise of the 6' to work withtin the world of DCUC figs is a bit off base...they aren't bad. Appropriately labeled Select Sculpts for their higher articulation and included accessories-- Aqualad's arsenal is pretty rad.
What got me really pumped was the news of a continued Green Lantern wave 5 and 6 picking up from Blackest Night and Brightest via the most affordable statue pimps out there-- DC Direct! These aren't the greatest pics out there but peep who DCD is bringing to the shelves!!!
Yes, a redeux of punkass Guy Gardner-- who looks to be the main hero of the Green Lantern War, Soranak Natu-- daughter of Sinestro and thank you for listening on how we wanted this one!! (though it's just a repainted bust of Jade and Dove) still looks nice and finally Blue Lantern Brother Warth! His character was a must add...speculation on another figure to make the wave.
And though it's cool to see all the GL movie figs, besides the C&C Parallax-- it is all about the comic-inspired molds for reals. Let's look at those Green Lantern wave 6 now yeah!
The Red Lantern Gardner is a must-own, check his demented buzzsaw construct! Stel is meh-- agree with most that Mattel C&C version is where it's at. GL Arkkis Chummuck who is dope, but probably woulda been cooler as a Black Lantern. Then you have the GL Hal energy construct...a bit indifferent on this.
Finally, they got a GL boxed-set that includes a half Blue/Green GL Hal that is just a great concept, Indigo Tribe Munnk, GL Fatality and, yes!!! a Black Lantern Blue Beetle. Dope artwork for the pack too.
And last but not least...IMO the showstopper..(drumrolls)
Hasbro strikes lightning twice with the biggest draws for SDCC exclusives. Last year it was the baddasery of planet devourer Galactus and how do they top that? No, not with just a giant-sized Sentinel. You have the G.I. Joe Skystriker repainted as a Generation 1 Starscream. Included will be a Cobra Commander wearing a flight suit and holding a gun mode Generation 1 Megatron!! Ohhh Emmm Gee!!! This has to be one of the most creative, ill-fab collabos out there- reminiscent of IDW's GIJoe vs Transformers run. And expect new boxart in the GI Joe style we all love. Big lines...here we come!!

New Trailer! X-Men: First Class
4:14 PM
With Bryan Singer's magic back in the mix (obviously missed in the finale of the trilogy), a prequel approach that is framed around the beginnings of the X-Men with Xavier and Erik at the helm during the Cold War--and Matthew Vaughn in the Director's drivers seat -- I expected to see a fab teaser trailer like this to get us all raving about dem mutants.
Highly stylized and like every other comic film reboot-- more modernized, gritty with a whole lot of sexual undertones. Like what I see yo!

Highly stylized and like every other comic film reboot-- more modernized, gritty with a whole lot of sexual undertones. Like what I see yo!
SYNOPSIS: X-MEN: FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.
The film stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon. Matthew Vaughn (“Kick-Ass”) directs, and the producers are Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg and Bryan Singer. Singer, who helmed the acclaimed blockbusters “X-Men” and “X2,” wrote the story for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS.

Great Songs, Horrible Message
10:33 AM
Musicians aren't known for their sound relationship advice. Rappers run trains. Rock stars bang underage girls. Country twangers get dumped, move to Mexico and live on "refried dreams." None of these actions are socially acceptable.
But give musicians one thing: They usually have pretty decent self-esteem. You may wrong them, but they call you out on your trifling ways in verse. And, hey, isn't good for us to soak up a little of that attitude and stand up for ourselves when we're getting played?
There are exceptions, however. Let's review two of the worst, shall we?
Jerry Butler - "Never Give You Up"
Jerry's got it bad for this girl, and he's determined to stick it out despite some suffering some pretty serious wrongs in the relationship. He puts it all out there in the first verse:
Girl, you treat me bad, and I know why
Yeah I've seen you runnin' around with that other guy
And you think if you hurt me that I'll go away
Made it up in my mind that I'm here to stay
Can you imagine Jerry calling you up and venting about this? "What's that you say, Jerry? She's treating you bad? That's a bummer, buddy. You caught her cheating on you, too? That bitch! And you think she's doing it for the sole purpose of forcing you to leave? Man, I hate it when people don't have the guts to just break up with a person they don't want to be with anymore. Oh well, there's other fish in th- YOU SAID WHAT? You'll never leave, even after all that?"
He continues:
Whisper in his ear
You tell him that Jerry said he'll never let you go
The guy that's having sex with your girlfriend/wife is either going to laugh at you or feel sorry for you when she whispers that in his ear, Jerry.
Don't you understand
What you're doing to the man?
When you get played like that, you don't get to call yourself "The Man" anymore, Jerry.
And finally:
Girl I'd rather die than to see you with somebody else
We've already been over this, Jerry. Your bluff holds no credibility.
The SOS Band - "Just Be Good to Me"
Mary Davis, the SOS Band's lead singer, didn't write this ode to turning a blind eye (that credit goes to the production duo of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis), but if you sing the words, you're responsible for them.
Mary is a little slower to reveal her relationship issues than Jerry is. She starts off complaining about her nosy friends, who say she'll never lock her man down. But what do they know? Maybe it's a new relationship - there's plenty of time to talk commitment. It's not like he's out sleeping with a bunch of other girls, right?
People always talkin' 'bout
Your reputation
I don' care about your other girls
Just be good to me
Well, that's not good. Don't give the dude a green light to hump around! Then it just gets depressing:
And you, I won't try to change
We talk about it and I
Never had a piece of you
And to have all of nothing... (ooh ooh)
Here's where the guy needs to be wary. Anyone willing to put up with that kind of behavior is liable to go nuts. And Mary starts sounding all Fatal Attraction:
You may have many others
But I know when you're with me
You are all mine
That's almost cute. But later:
I'll give you love, I will smother you
I'll give you affection, I won't bother you
Sooo not buying that last line. Mary's gonna be all up in this guy's business. Showing up at his job. Sitting across the aisle from him at church. Renting the next-door apartment.
And then the true intent comes out:
I'm like a cherry pie, I will tie you down...
And we'll always be together, be together
Not sure how cherry pies tie people down (food coma?), but it's the ends that matter here, not the means. That last line is straight Gary Busey, last scene in Hider in the House, gunshot through his and Mimi Rogers' heads so they can be together in the afterlife.
(Haven't seen Hider? Sorry, it's not on Netflix, or even region 1 DVD for that matter. But some weirdo uploaded it in seven parts to YouTube. Here's the scene referenced above.)

New Footage! Young Justice- Denial
9:30 AM
This week's episode-- "Infiltration" continues on with the mystery of who's arrow was retrieved during their battle with Amazo. Though Robin believed it was Speedy that has possibly turned a corner to join their team-- Green Arrow immediately knocked that by saying it wasn't one of his arrows. Yes, it was Artemis!
So we will get more background on the mysterious sixth member of Young Justice as she works to free a young genius that has been abducted by the League of Assassins! Will we be getting a younger Talia Al Ghul as the main villian or will it be Ra's?
Another curious thing to discuss is why is it that we received no new footage or screens of episode 6, which has been a normal thing released by WB/DC animation?? Hmm...could it be that this is the episode that marks the death of a young hero as promised by Vietti sometime ago?
While many forums believe Artemis as being the first death-- it won't be happening in "Infiltration" as we get to see her interacting with her new teammates in this rough, but cool footage of next week's episode titled "Denial."
Coolness to have a Vertigo character- Madame Xanadu with an appearance and how about Dr. Fate ya'll?! Hoping that more JSA characters are connected to the story and was that Vandal Savage that pulled the disappearing act with Kent Nelson? And will Speedy/Red Arrow be kicking the bucket tomorrow? We shall see!!

if you don't know, now you know- FF = Future Foundation
11:50 AM
Sure it's a reboot but props to Hickman, Epting and the rest of Marvel to go balls out on it by not only busting a makeover, adding Spidey (was that really a surprise?) but re-amping the concept of FF to the Future Foundation. For those that haven't been reading on since Hickman's hostile takeover-- FF has been filled with ill moments like- Doom saving the day, Reed killing off Galactus, Sue beeyoch slapping Namor in front of all of Atlantis and most notably the death of Johnny Storm.
Hickman is a lover of symbols, weaves a multitude of complex inner-meanings to his stories-- whether it is with his rich love of using history, bombarding readers with a barrage of scientific methods/facts in juxtaposition to confuse/amaze-- or just use a simple concept like a hexagon as a re-brand for Marvel's first fam. I like the clean application of white for the FF costumes as this hasn't ever been a team that was in the shadows or covert-ops like just about every other team out there.
Marko Djurdjevic's concept designs do signal to being a stormtrooper and Tron mash-up, but hey I love em both anyways. Now lets get back to the hexagon-- which has been used as a subtle design aspect in the first page inlay summarizing every ish for awhile now.
The hexagon is the only shape that is seen in nature as it is the most efficient use of space and materials (a beehive), it has obvious connections to science or the microscopic mapping of DNA. Now isn't that what the FF has always been about?! A bunch of dorky, genius imaginauts that are out to save the
world!! Yes! Quit hating on those threads ya'll, you need to jyst sit back and enjoy the wrath of this math. The Fantastic Four is no longer limited to a few but many, with the immediate inclusion of the original Future Foundation-- Valeria, Franklin and Alex Power, Artee and the other pre-pubescent super-genius’.
Now having Peter Parker jump on, well he fills the comedic role that the Human Torch was known for-- but also we will get to see Spidey go more into his science-nerd, lab-rat ways to keep Reed company and similar to how Beast is used in Secret Avengers-- more for his brain and less for his brawn. As more deets roll out we will bring it to you and until March-- maybe you can play catch up with some back issues/trades ; P Love where this is going yeah?!
